Bonding

Tooth colored composite resin fillings used to repair cavities are a type of bonding. Bonding can be used for many other purposes as well. Cosmetic purposes include closing gaps in teeth, adjusting the alignment, and repairing chipped or broken teeth. Once the tooth is prepared a composite resin material is selected to match the existing teeth. The bonding material is then applied to the surface of the tooth to repair the damage or for cosmetic purposes. The patient should consider whitening prior to bonding because the composite resin will not be affected by whitening products. Therefore if the patient whitens prior to the bonding a lighter, brighter composite can be used to match the existing teeth.
